Navigating PCOS

My Journey to an Integrative Approach to Health and Self-Care

In today’s fast-paced world, the concept of self-care can sometimes feel like a luxury—something we fit in only after every other “to-do” has been checked off the list. But for many of us, including myself, taking care of our health is not just essential—it’s transformative. My journey with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) taught me this in profound ways, leading me to embrace an integrative or holistic model of care. This approach now shapes both my personal wellness and my professional practice.

The Turning Point: Living with PCOS

PCOS has been part of my life for as long as I can remember; I just didn’t know it was PCOS! It brought its own set of challenges, but one of the biggest was the sheer level of fatigue I experienced, often feeling like I was 'running on fumes. During my early days working in a hospital, or as a mum with a newborn, while still undiagnosed, I often pushed through exhaustion, hoping sheer willpower and a desire to be a “good mum” would carry me through. Yet, deep down, I knew there had to be a reason my body felt constantly drained, even when I was doing all the basics.

Those times were difficult—I was stretched thin, juggling professional responsibilities, motherhood, and personal health challenges. I often reflect on how I felt back then: bloated, plagued by cystic acne flare-ups, moody, with painful periods—you name it. I began asking myself some hard questions: Why wasn’t the traditional approach working for me? Was there something deeper going on that needed my attention?

Embracing an Integrative Approach

A debilitating episode of vestibular migraines, that left me bedridden for weeks, became my turning point. I realised I needed an approach that went beyond just managing symptoms. I wanted to understand the root causes—why my body was reacting the way it was and what could be done to truly support it.

I was fortunate to connect with various practitioners, each bringing a unique set of expertise. This exposure led me to explore integrative care, a model that combines the best of traditional medicine with a holistic approach. Rather than merely addressing individual symptoms, integrative care considers the bigger picture—your lifestyle, mental and emotional wellbeing, diet, and unique health needs. It’s a model that has allowed me to see health as a journey rather than a destination, one where each small change contributes to sustainable wellness.

Transforming Challenges into Empathy

Living with a chronic condition can sometimes feel isolating, yet it has given me a deep empathy for others facing similar health hurdles. I understand the frustration of trying everything and still feeling as though something’s missing. Now, having emerged from that journey, I want to encourage others that there is hope— that finding balance is possible, and that sustainable change can be achieved with the right support.

Embracing Your Own Wellness Journey

To anyone reading this who may be struggling with health challenges—whether it’s PCOS, fatigue, or any other condition—know that you’re not alone. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential. Take the time to listen to your body, ask questions, and explore what works best for you. Health isn’t always straightforward, but with patience and a willingness to look deeper, you can find an approach that truly supports your unique needs.
